World’s Children Day: A Better Future
Background of World Children’s Day
World Children’s Day is a global celebration that takes place every year on November 20th. It is a day to recognise the rights and needs of children, as well as their achievements and contributions to society. The day also aims to raise awareness and mobilise action for the protection and welfare of children around the world.
The origin of International Children’s Day dates back to 1925, when the World Conference for the Well-being of Children was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference adopted a declaration on the rights of children and called for the establishment of a day dedicated to children. However, it was not until 1950 that the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed June 1st as International Children’s Day.
Since then, many countries and organisations have joined the celebration and organised various activities and events for children on this day. Some examples are:
– China:
Children’s Day is a public holiday for primary schools and kindergartens. Children usually receive gifts from their parents and teachers and participate in cultural and recreational activities organized by schools or communities.
– India:
Children’s Day coincides with the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India and a champion of children’s rights. Children are honoured with awards and prizes for their achievements in various fields, such as academics, sports, arts, and social service.
– Mexico:
Children’s Day is celebrated on April 30th. Children enjoy special treats and entertainment, such as games, shows, concerts, and parades. Many institutions and organizations also offer free or discounted services and admission to children on this day.
– Poland
Children’s Day is also known as Dzień Dziecka. Children receive gifts and greetings from their families and friends, and have fun at amusement parks, zoos, museums, cinemas, and other places. Schools also organize special events and programs for children on this day.
World Children Day and Its Significance
World Children’s Day is more than just a day of celebration. It is also a day of reflection and action for the betterment of children’s lives. According to UNICEF, there are still millions of children who suffer from poverty, hunger, disease, violence, abuse, exploitation, discrimination, and neglect. Many children also lack access to quality education, health care, clean water, sanitation, and protection.
Therefore, International Children’s Day is an opportunity for everyone to reaffirm their commitment to uphold the rights of children and to ensure their well-being and development. It is also a chance for everyone to appreciate the role of children in shaping the future of humanity and to support their aspirations and dreams.
As Nelson Mandela once said:
There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.
